The Grid - Postmortem
8/24/12 by UncommonStuff
So, it's finaly out there for the public to play... But the Grid has been about in one form or another for just over a year now. This is the first time it's had an official "Full" public release.
And in hindsight?
My first reaction is that I quite like it. It's flawed and essentially only packages age old game ideas in a really nice way. Lights out, Match 5, Sequence and Reflex are my take on very familiar game mechanics.
The response has been mixed, and rightly so. The overall style and presentation is strong, the gameplay OK, but unless you are familiar with the game mechanics some players are left confused. My fault at the end of the day.
So what was the goal behind the Grid? As a game maker starting to improve my programming skills I wanted to produce a series of random puzzle games. I set myself the challenge of replicating 4 games but giving them a new and unique twist.
Thankfully I leave this project with a greater understanding of programming. From the feedback I have gotten I also know the importance of making a game easily playable.
Thanks for playing though. I'd love to hear your further thoughts.
